The Foundation that Surely was Laid

Michael E. Wood

While reading through the book of Ezra, I came to chapter 3 verse 6, which says, “…But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.”

Of course as you read through the entire text of the book of Ezra you find that in time and against all attempts to thwart the building of this temporal Jewish temple were overcome, the foundation was laid and the building completed.

What a glorious day we live in that many of us have a completed copy of the scriptures, and we are enabled to see by the sure mercies of God, as blood bought children of God through the sacrifice of Christ Himself and the effectual work of His Spirit, that we as gentiles “…are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In Him you also are being built together, into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.” (Ephesians 2:19-22)

And thus we have the assurance, that come what may, ‘…God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those that are His”, and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”’ 2nd Timothy 2:19

Thou Father God, You without change
Revealed the foundation that surely was laid
By Your apostles and all Your prophets
And by the stone without hands that was made;
Chief-cornerstone, on which is built
The city of lights where Your glory doth shine,
And of all men, Your Spirit expressly
Speaks to our hearts that we know we are Thine.

Help us to offer in Thy true temple
And on the altar of which is now made
In such a way only those holy and
Bought by the price of the blood that was paid:
Such sacrifice as is now pleasing,
Accepted, the fragrance in which You delight,
Redeemed by the ransom of Jesus who lives
In Your great inaccessible excellent light!
